Music review of Enigma's new cd The Screen Behind the Mirror
Enigma* The Screen Behind the Mirror (Virgin) The Screen Behind the Mirror, album number four for Enigma founder Michael Cretu, starts out just fine. In the first two tracks — “Sadness” and “Return to Innocence” — of the one-man show, Cretu delivers the dreamy mix of ethno-sounds, dance grooves, African rhythms and New Age that made him famous. Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Freudian lyrics round out the two winners, leaving the listener hopeful. Unfortunately, the rest of what promised to be another Enigma masterpiece is nothing more than the stuff of elevator Muzak played in cheap department stores.
