Music review of Gabrielle's RISE
Gabrielle* RISE (Motor Music)Gabrielle’s first two albums earned the London-born singer the unofficial title “Britain’s answer to Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey.” In those days, Gabrielle possessed a voice every bit as imposing as her American soul sisters, as well as an ear for engaging material. Unfortunately, the singer has lost her edge. OK, we can forgive her to a point. Her personal setbacks include her ex-boyfriend’s involvement in a murder. But there is no reason for releasing the uninspired CD Rise, 12 miserable remakes of R & B classics that were fine just the way they were! Mariah and Whitney can relax now.
