Music review of Al Jarreau's Tomorrow Today
Al Jarreau** Tomorrow Today (Universal)Al Jarreau is certainly blessed with a heavenly voice, one that fits into a variety of music genres, including soul, funk and disco, and covers a five-octave range. Throughout the 1970s, the dynamic jazz singer was unfortunately overlooked by the masses. More unfortunate, however, is the fact that in the 1980s Jarreau sold his soul to the radio-ditty devil. Throwing away his natural talent to perform soggy, corny love songs earned him a lot of airtime but little respect in jazz circles. Tomorrow Today delivers more of the same, with its banal standards and FM crooners. A big disappointment.
