Tips for in and around Munich
As an increasing number of pedestrians and motorists are being injured by careless bicyclists, the following fines have recently been raised substantially: speeding, from DM 10 to 20; ignoring traffic lights, from DM 20 to 40; cycling in the wrong direction on a one-way street, from DM 10 to 30; not using bike lanes, from DM 20 to 50; cycling in the wrong direction in lanes, from DM 10 to 30.
Over the next few years, the banks of the Isar will be relieved of concrete walls, and landscaped to resemble the lush, green riverside of Munich’s yesteryear. While the change will afford more serene views, it will also prevent damaging flooding, as witnessed in 1999.
Not only will we soon enjoy new S-Bahn trains, but better service as well. The city of Munich recently approved a plan to build a second main subway thoroughfare, parallel to the existing tracks between Donnersbergerbrücke and Ostbahnhof. The new tunnel is hoped to relieve constant underground traffic jams, thus improving the MVV’s miserable punctuality.
