Tollwood
Summer is the time for outdoor festivals, and none is more popular in the Munich cultural calendar than Tollwood. For 25 days (June 22-July 16) it will turn the quiet southern end of the Olympiapark into an alternative playground, buzzing with theater-goers, music-lovers and those who simply enjoy strolling through Tollwood, sampling ethnic specialties at the numerous food stands or browsing through the stalls offering ceramics, jewelry and other hand-made crafts. With the smell of joss sticks still wafting through the air, Tollwood — meanwhile in its thirteenth year — certainly hasn’t lost its alternative character, but a look at this year’s line-up also shows that it has turned into a full-fledged cultural event, attracting major music, dance and theater stars. This summer, highlights include an open air performance of the opera Carmen; five circus companies from Asia, Africa and South America; a dance-theater-cook-comedy performance by the Broadway Asia Dance Company; and concerts given by Marla Glen, ZZ Top, Huey Lewis & The News, Natalie Cole and Lou Reed.
