Loony Bar and Restaurant
Much to the chagrin of Munich’s Irish community, one of the traditional Irish pubs, Fiddler’s Green, located on Nymphenburgerstrasse, recently closed down. In its place, the bar and restaurant Loony opened its doors with an ambitious mission: to bring the world’s culinary best to Munich. “We want to cook as well as [German star chef Eckhart] Witzigmann, but our guests should feel as though they are in a ‘normal’ restaurant,” says Andreas Ertle, one of the restaurant’s two owners. Himself a former student of Witzigmann, Ertle spent the past year in New York, catering to the demanding tastes of the New Yorkers at the “in” restaurant CoCo Opera. Together with his partner, Munich chef Ludwig Hölzl, formerly of Wiener Platz and Huterer, he has set up a restaurant with the theme “food around the world.” The wide-ranging menu features a large selection of Bavarian and Italian dishes as well as specialties from around the globe, such as Hawaiian grilled tuna, Thai chicken or Caribbean-style swordfish with bananas in a coconut sauce. Owners anticipate that diners will be crazy about Loony.
