A multi-artist project opens at three Munich museums.
Dream City “Munich as a dream city.” The many interpretations of those words link the contemporary works presented by the thirty international artists who have joined forces for the current exhibition of the same name. “Dream City” is a collaborative effort of Museum Villa Stuck, Kunstraum München, and Künstverein München, in conjunction with the Siemens Culture Program. Every artist’s contribution reflects that slogan, producing a diverse collection of art which deals critically with Munich’s perception of itself. Questions such as what role art can play in the education of society and whether critically reflective art is even possible in the public forum are framed and answered by the artists. Among them are the German “social sculptor” Joseph Beuys and American “activist artists.” Each museum presents a different aspect of the city’s social context. Kunstraum München explores Munich’s ethnic and social diversity through works by Gülsün Karamustafa, Stefan Kern and Martha Rosler, while the artists at Kunstverein München, including Franz Ackermann and Yvonne P. Doderer, examine Munich’s urbanization and institutions. Socially critical art dominates at the Museum Villa Stuck, where works by Beuys and Felix Gonzales-Torres are on display. A symposium (May 1-2) and guide book will accompany the exhibit, elucidating its art-historical background and contemporary context. “Dream City” runs through June 20. Kunstraum München tel.
