2000 Presidential voting information for U.S. citizens in Germany

It won’t be long before U.S. Election Day, November 7, 2000. Several resources provide assistance to voting Americans in Germany. United States citizens do not vote at embassies or consulates, but rather by mailing in an absentee ballot to your home state, or to the state in which you last resided. The voting officers at these locations can provide information about the voting process and will assist in complying with your home state’s laws. Also offered is a toll-free number (from Germany) for the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) Ombudsman Service at 0130-81-9277. Toll-free calls can be made (from anywhere in Germany) to the FVAP and the Department of Defense Voting Information Center by dialing 0800-1007428. Check out the Web for details on specific issues, candidates and about the Electoral College, at www.usembassy.de/elections2000. For your state’s registration and ballot request deadlines, refer to the Voting Assistance Guide, and allow sufficient time to meet the deadlines. If your vote is not received in time, in most cases, it will count only as a “back-up” ballot for the general election. For access to the 2000-2001 Guide and to download absentee ballots see www.fvap.ncr.gov (though some states do not offer this service). To contact the American Consulate General in Munich, call (089) 288 86 05. A debate on each candidate’s stance on political issues, held by the chairpersons of Democrats Abroad Germany and Republicans Abroad Germany, will take place on Tuesday, September 19, at 18:30 at the Amerika Haus, Karolinenplatz 3. Entrance is free-of-charge. For more information, call (089) 150 24 73.
