New York artist Todd Lehmann at the Otto-Galerie

Munich’s thriving gallery scene takes pride in presenting the works of local artists, but city residents don’t have to look far to find internationally acclaimed works of art. Paintings by New York artist Todd Lehman are currently on display at the Otto-Galerie until November 10. The Pennsylvania native studied painting at New York’s Art Students League with muralist Edward Laning. Lehman’s second love, the world of music, dance and theater, inspired him to work on Broadway, where he has designed abstract stage sets. The artist is currently working on pieces for dance projects with the Balinese American Fusion Dance Company. Lehman’s sense for the dramatic can be felt in his new paintings at the Otto-Galerie, the artist’s first show outside the United States. His expressionist paintings are abstractions of great intensity, capturing the spirit of landscapes and cityscapes. Works such as Standing Alone in an October Mist or Garbage Can Music or East 5th Street suggest that Lehman perceives his surroundings with all his senses. He translates the invisible, especially sounds, into bold strokes of color, contrasting them with patches of the deepest black. “Todd Lehman: Paintings 1997–2000” is on display at the Otto-Galerie, Augustenstr. 45 & 54, Tel. 52 93 92, www.otto-galerie.de. <<< CH
