MF's Öko Corner
In light of the recent BSE disaster in Germany, many have given up beef for the New Year. As facts — ones that have long been common knowledge but are currently taking a front seat in the media — are revealed regarding the mistreatment of livestock, genetically manipulated produce and the overall malpractice in the agriculture industry, many of us are considering “going organic.” Though, as a rule, organic goods are more expensive than their pesticide and antibiotic-carrying counterparts, more healthful eating seems to be worth the added cost. In fact, if the masses were to begin shopping at Bioläden
, prices would certainly drastically decrease. Below are selected organic food stores in Munich. We will continue to provide more addresses, as well as information on the organic food industry in Germany, in future News and Views articles.
Basic
Schleissheimerstrasse 160, Tel. (089) 30 72 57 73
Römerstrasse 4, Tel. (089) 38 79 93 18
Basic is Munich’s largest organic food “super store.” Many products offered here are cheaper than at smaller competitors. Both locations serve organic meals. The Römerstrasse store even has a sushi bar.
Vollcorner
Frundsbergstrasse 18, Tel. (089) 16 17 09
Arnulfstrasse 134 Tel. (089) 13 92 98 20
Maistrasse 10, Tel. (089) 532 80 63
Another one of the city’s large Naturkost shops, Vollcorner offers a wide variety and comparatively low prices. The Arnulfstrasse location is a supermarket. Somewhat hidden between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz, the Maistrasse store is spacious, well stocked and boasts an especially helpful, friendly staff.
Grüner Markt
Weissenburgerstrasse 5, Tel. (089) 48 61 93
Rosenheimerstrasse 65, Tel. (089) 48 00 20 28
Long a Haidhausen favorite, Grüner Markt, what was once a one-store operation in the form of a “hole in the wall,” was the first organic supermarket in the city — shopping carts and all! Like the aforementioned stores, this chain is known for quality, good advice and reasonable prices.
