Fasching Ball Season

The traditionally wacky carnival time, also known as the “fifth season of the year” in Germany, is almost here. Although the stronghold of Narren and Jecken (fools and jesters) lies more in the northern part of Germany, Fasching in Munich is not limited to the närrische Treiben (goofy doings) on Rosenmontag and Faschingsdienstag (Feb. 26 and 27). At the Deutsches Theater, for example, the masquerade season begins early in February with numerous balls and parties.

Highlights Include: 03.02 The Ball der Silbernen Rose (Silver Rose Ball) is one of the most elegant balls in Germany. Munich residents compare it with the famous Viennese Opera Ball. Star tenor Peter Seiffert and lyric soprano Petra Maria Schnitzer will perform popular music accompanied by the Munich Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Hugo Strasser and his dance orchestra will keep the party going into the wee hours.
04.02 One of the sweetest balls will be the Ball der 1,000 Torten (Pastrymakers’ Ball). From 14:00 to 16:00, elaborate cakes can be admired in the Silbersaal. For those with a sweet tooth, the event’s cake raffle will be a highlight.
07.02 Six hours of dance (16:00–22:00) await you at the Nostalgia Ball, where Fasching is celebrated in the charming fashion of the 1920s. Together with the Rafael Swing Dance Orchestra the Nostalgia Ball will be highlighted by countless dance shows as well as performances given by the popular dance formation Münchner Français.
17.02 The Night of the 1,000 Veils lures you into the magic of the Orient. Sponsored by the local center of oriental dance, this night will include belly dancing of the highest caliber, Arabian music and disco sounds. Très sheik — organizers request that you arrive in Arabian costume.
26.02 One of the final highlights, on Rosenmontag, is the Bal Classique, whose motto this year is “Latin Carnival.” A glittering Latin party will be thrown in honor of Jupiter and rounded off by the Banana Boat Showband.

Events will be held at the Deutsches Theater, Schwanthalerstr.13, Tel. (089) 55 23 44 44.
