Vantage Point

Women guiding women

“Women can’t even program a VCR.” So goes the prejudiced adage of today — propagated by both sexes. Sylvia Hladky, director of the transportation center at the Deutsches Museum, however, contends that “most women simply focus on different aspects of technology and science. They are more interested in the historical correlation between technological and scientific progress, combined with its consequences for society.” For that reason, she and her colleague, Elisabeth Schelle, initiated a program at the Deutsches Museum nine years ago called “Women Guide Women”. During ninety-minute tours, groups are introduced to the worlds of aviation or navigation or pharmaceuticals — from a female perspective. In order to give working women the chance to participate, the Deutsches Museum has now added the gender-specific guided tours to its evening program, every other Thursday at 18:00.

Scheduled tours:
08.02 Artificial Gold and Breast Milk Substitutes — Historic Chemical Laboratories
22.02 A Journey to Mallorca (Piano music by Chopin and texts by his muse, George Sand)
08.03 Light and Sight (optics exhibition)
