Amazing Grace

Ballet week

With Ballet Week 200,the Bavarian State Ballet celebrates the art of dance and has planned a program illustrating the change in the expression of feelings throughout the history of dance. The classic ballet repertoire, including Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Die Kameliendame and A Cinderella Story, will form a contrast to contemporary dance performances. For her world premiere, the American postmodern dance expert Lucinda Childs has created a ballet based on Händel’s Water Music and a Concerto Grosso by Corelli. Childs will be accompanied by two modern ballet veterans. Mats Ek, whose greatest success is an eccentric interpretation of Giselle, has given birth to a new piece entitled A Sort Of, which is described as a bizarre explosion of movement. In addition, Munich star choreographer Hans van Manen has composed a chamber ballet to the piano music of Scarlatti, Karayev and Cage. A guest appearance of the renowned Hamburg Ballet, performing a dance version of the Messiah will round off one of the top annual dance events in Munich. All events will take place at the Bayerische Staatsoper. For the full schedule, see our What’s Up section.
