Tollwood summer festival
Munich’s favorite summer players—ethnic food vendors, purveyors of esoteric wares, hippies, clowns and musicians—will take to the Olympic Park sod once again, at this year’s Tollwood festival, from June 14 to July 8. In addition to local bands, theater groups, circus performers and DJs, internationally renowned top acts will rejuvenate winter-weary Münchner in the festival’s Musik Arena. On June 15, disco kings Hot Chocolate will open for Motown greats the Temptations. Ex-Talking Head vocalist David Byrne will perform songs from his new album, Look into the Eyeball on June 26. The following night, strains of “Aqualung” and “Thick as a Brick” will fill the night air after Jethro Tull takes to the stage. Bizarrely coifed Finnish rockers Leningrad Cowboys, known to enjoy an Oktoberfest Mass or two, will play on June 29. Don’t miss the band’s opening act, The Schankman Twins, high school-aged sisters who serve up some fantastic bluegrass. Saxophonist Candy Dulfer and her band, Funky Stuff, will collaborate with Eurythmics lead Dave Stewart on July 1. Dulfer, an accomplished musician who has worked with the likes of Prince, Van Morrison, David Sanborn and Aretha Franklin, will present songs she produced for her Live in Amsterdam recording. Queen of salsa Celia Cruz will get the crowd wiggling on July 7 and jazz crooner George Benson will cool things down on Tollwood’s final night, June 8.
