Schloss Matzen offers two Munich Found readers the chance to spend a weekend there.
Americans Chris and Margaret Kump inherited Schloss Matzen in 1995. Over the past four years they have transformed it into a charming bed-and-breakfast in the heart of Tyrol, Austria. Guests are welcomed with warmth and hospitality, not the cold gloom one might expect of a medieval fortress. This cultivated comfort makes Schloss Matzen the perfect destination for a romantic weekend away from it all. Located in Reith im Alpbachtal just 30 minutes from Innsbruck, Austria it is an easy ninety-minute drive from Munich. The Kumps are both outstanding chefs and own the renowned Café Beaujolais in the rolling hills of Mendocino, California. Margaret Kump prepares some of the breakfast specialties that put Café Beaujolais on the culinary map at Schloss Matzen. It is not uncommon to be greeted by the sweet aroma of her homemade raspberry applesauce bubbling on the stove. A variety of Austrian breads from the local bakery also accompany Matzen’s hearty breakfasts. One lucky reader will be the recipient of a weekend for two at Schloss Matzen – just fill out the reader survey on page 39 and send it to us by May 31, 1999.
