A break-down of the new MVV costs and transportation regulations.
May 30 sees important changes to the fare structure of Munich’s public transportation network (MVV). The five existing ring-shaped zones will be reduced to four: one central zone, which, as now, will constitute the “inner area” (Innenraum), and three further zones in the “outer area” (Aussenraum). Single tickets (Einzelfahrkarten) will cost DM 3.60 per zone. Single tickets are valid for three hours on all forms of transport, and, as long as it is not a round trip, breaks in the trip are permissable. Short trips (Kurzstrecken) – up to four stops, a maximum of two of which can be via U-Bahn or S-Bahn – will cost DM 1.80 and are valid for one hour. Children between six and 14 will pay a flat-rate of DM 1.50 per ride; kids under six will travel free. All tickets must be validated (entwertet) in one of the blue “E” boxes, located in the tram or bus, or outside of the U- or S-Bahn. As before, a cheaper option is to use strip tickets (Streifenkarten). The new adult tickets will have 10 strips (DM 15); children’s tickets will have five strips (DM 6). For each zone, adults must cancel two strips. For short rides, cancel one strip. People between 15 and 20 cancel just one adult strip per zone; children between six and 14 cancel one child strip per ride. Day passes (Tageskarten) for a single person will cost DM 9 for either the inner or outer area, DM 18 (children DM 3) for the whole network (Gesamtnetz). Partner day passes (DM 13 / DM 26) will allow up to five adults to travel; children between six and 14 count as half an adult. The monthly green ticket (Grüne Karte) – which allows travel after 9:00 on weekdays and all day on the weekend and holidays – goes up from DM 62 to DM 65 for either the inner or outer area. For the whole network, the price actually goes down from DM 84 to DM 78. Season tickets (Zeitkarten) – which allow you to travel before 9:00 during the week – are being renamed the IsarCard. One major change is that weekly and monthly IsarCards will be transferable and will not require a photo. Also, you can buy them at any MVV sales point ot ticket machine. If you want a personalized IsarCard – which, should you forget it, you can produce later to avoid all but DM 5 of the DM 60 fine, and which can be replaced for DM 10 if lost – you have to buy an annual one, available only from the MVV customer center in Poccistrasse. Annual IsarCards are available also as transferable tickets; both versions cost the same. For the IsarCards, the four MVV zones will be subdivided into four “rings,” replacing the 141 existing mini-zones. The monthly price of the four rings in the inner area will be DM 86. On weekends and holidays, and after 9:00 weekdays, adults with either a valid IsarCard or Grüne Karte can take three children between six and 14 free of charge (or all your own children). Bikes can be taken on the U- or S-Bahn, with a single ticket or two strips (children cancel one) required for each ride. Alternatively, new day passes for bikes are available (DM 4.50, DM 3 for children). Last, but in Germany definitely not least, as of May 30, anyone with a valid ticket can take a dog free. <<<
