The Dark Side

On November 29 and 30, the British Council will present “Black Writing from Britain” at Café Muffathalle. On the first evening, authors Diran Adebayo and Nick Barlay will read from their latest novels. Adebayo’s second novel, My Once Upon a Time, is a spellbinding thriller pumped with rap lyricism, patois slang and dance hall vibes. In a press release for the event, organizers explain that, “though Barley’s skin is not dark, his writing is extremely black.” In his novel, Curvy Box, this enfant terrible of British literature describes one day and one sleepless night in the life of a London drug dealer. On November 30, performance artists Patience Agbabi and Levi Tafari will present an interpretation of their poems. Tafari calls his work “dub poetry,” referring to the artist’s delight in combining his poems with reggae music. Performances on both nights begin at 8 pm. For more information, call the Muffathalle at (089) 45 87 50 00.
