Fasching 2002
In 1897, the Deutsches Theater threw its first Fasching (Carnival)—also known as the “fifth season of the year”—bash. This historic location has hosted dance performers, shows, costume balls and other theme parties ever since. This year, the theater will feature 27 balls and events through February 17.
Highlights of this year’s program:
Feb. 3–2 pm to 4 pm: The sweetest ball of all—Ball der
1,000 Torten (cake bakers ball), in the Silbersaal, offers Fasching revellers the chance to admire and sample
elaborate tortes.
Feb. 6–8 pm to 4 am: Tanzender Globus die Megafete der Kolpingjugend . In the main hall, two top bands—Amoradas and Showband Chari Vari—two DJs and Live-Jazz featuring Daniel Prandl on piano will provide for a night of non-stop partying. A snowboard and equipment will be raffled.
Feb. 9–8 pm to 4 am: Traumschiff der phantastische Ball der Abendzeitung. Here, you will find dancing in the Theaterkeller and a Weisswurst stand serving cold draft beer in the Silbersaal. Be creative—the person wearing the most imaginative costume will receive a prize.
Feb. 10–4 pm to 10 pm: Ich tanze mit dir in den Himmel hinein ... Six hours of shaking it with the Rafael Swing Dance Orchestra.
Feb. 11–8 pm to 3 am: On Rosenmontag, the Bal Classique features the Munich New Symphony Orchestra and Banana Boat Showband, who perform international hits into the wee hours.
Feb. 12–7 pm to 2 am: Die letzte Nacht, annually held on Fasching Tuesday, is the big finale. Radio DJ Benny Schnier from Charivari 95.5 plays chart toppers from the 1980s to the present. Live music by the band Wipe Out keeps the party rocking into the morning of Ash Wednesday.
Feb. 16–Ball der Silbernen Rose (Silver Rose Ball) is one of the most elegant balls in Germany. Munich residents compare it with the famous Viennese Opera Ball. Star tenor Peter Seiffert and lyric soprano Petra Maria Schnitzer will perform popular music accompanied by the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Hugo Strasser and his dance orchestra will keep the energy high all evening.
