India—a continent boasting more than a billion people, five world religions and 22 languages spoken in over 100 dialects—is the subject of this year’s International Spring Book Week from March 7 to 17. United by the motto “India: Between Myth and a Mouse Click,” 20 Indian authors will present their works and opinions in numerous readings, discussions and lectures to a Munich audience. One among many highlights will be the theme night Polyphonic Voices on March 8 at the Literaturhaus (Salvatorplatz 1). On that evening (7 pm–1 am) eight authors will read texts written in their native languages—such as Bengali, Tamil and Hindi—or in English. Another event that may be of special interest for the English-speaking community will also take place at the Literaturhaus on March 15 at 8:30 pm. Here, four Indian emigrant authors—Vikram Chandra, Amit Chaudhuri, Kiran Nagarkar and U.R. Ananthamurthy—all of whom write in English, will discuss the clash of Eastern and Western traditions as reflected in their literary works. For a schedule of events, visit www.fruehjahrsbuchwoche.de.
