March 2002
Cast Away
Every six years in Munich, voters—residents of the city, including
EU members who have lived in the city for at least three months and are over 18—take to the polls to elect city council members and district representatives. Elections will be held this year on March 3. Though Munich mayor Christian Ude is slated to stay in office until 2005, the chipper leader, in an effort to save the city money, decided to step down so that the date of the mayoral elections would coincide with those for city council and district representatives. Mayoral elections—for which Ude, seemingly feeling secure in his position, will run again—will also be held on March 3. EU members should have already received their ballots in the mail. For more information on the elections, as well as an explanation (in German) of various voting rules and techniques—it is possible to give city council candidates more than one vote, for instance—visit
