Wing Tip
While most diners at Munich Airport’s Airbräu sport travel-wrinkled three-piece suits and carousel-battered briefcases instead of
Lederhosen and
Dirndl, the brew pub still has “Bavaria” written all over it. The first airport brewery established in Europe, Airbräu is the first, last and sometimes only taste of Bavaria—and Germany—that many international travelers get. But this jet-set outpost of German
Gemütlichkeit, tasty brew and authentic Bavarian cuisine isn’t just for frazzled flyers in need of something more substantial than typical airline fare. Since opening on 9.9.1999, Airbräu has, according to the management, become THE place to be for “the young and the young at heart.” Thursday night is live music night at the microbrewery, featuring everything from jazz to rock. In addition to the house-brewed
“FliegerQuell Helles” and “Kumulus Weissbier,” Airbräu also offers such seasonal brews as “Krampus” during winter and “Aviator” during “Starkbierzeit.” Beer lovers can order it by the glass or in two- and five-liter siphons and then tuck into such traditional German fare as
Schweinshaxe,
Blaukraut and
Knödel (roasted leg of pork with red sauerkraut and bread dumplings),
Käsespätzle (handmade pasta smothered in melted cheese and fried onions) or grilled Scampi on a bed of rigatoni. The brewery even offers “take-away”—two and five-liter siphons for imbibers strong enough to carry one home when the evening’s over, and for those who want to take a piece of Germany with them when flying home for the holidays. Airbräu is open daily from 10 am to 1 am. Reservations can be made by telephone (089) 97 59 31 11 or by fax (089) 97 59 31 06, and information about live entertainment is available online at
