Did you know that Munich’s subway system has 684 escalators, 89 stations and 420 ticket machines? At
www.ubahnmuenchen.de, the brainchild of 32-year-old Andreas Ziegler, you can find just about anything you want to know about the city’s underground trains. Ziegler—a former student of computer science, currently employed at the MVG (one of Munich’s public transportation systems)—started his unofficial Web site in 1998. The techie admits to spending at least one hour every day updating the information. Log on and take a virtual ride from Universität to Odeonsplatz, including a look at the instrument panel, or check out where car number 6091 is at this very moment. You don’t have to be a “Pufferküsser” (German slang for trainspotter) to enjoy this site, but, if you get bored with surfing through Munich’s subways, the site is linked to a subway webring, which will take you to subterranean train sites around the world.
