Summer's here

Munich's tollwood festival for 1999

Summer’s here In Munich, the unofficial start of summer has a name — Tollwood. The annual festival, held at the Olympic park’s southern-most edge, brings live music, international wares and cuisine, children’s activities, dance and theater to the Bavarian capital. Tollwood begins its 23-day run this year on June 18. Concerts include Nina Hagen, Gianna Nannini, Pat Metheny and Nena (“99 Luftballons”). On the “world stage” performances by song and dance troupes abound: South Africa’s The Zulu, Spain’s Senza Tempo, French group Compagnie Maguy Marin and Theatre de la Mezzanine, and German puppeteers Familie Flöz are but a few. Tollwood’s popular marketplace includes favorites: Africana, jewelry, organic produce, Indian spices, pottery and toys. For some, the main theme of Tollwood is eating. Food booths offer a “multi-culti” assortment: Egyptian koschari, Ethiopian ingera, Spanish paella, American steaks, French crêpes and Mexican tacos top a list which would take all three weeks to wade through. Many of the activities and live performances are free of charge. Call (089) 383 85 00 for more concert and performance ticket information. Tollwood Summer Festival 1999 runs June 18 through July 11 — much to the joy of Munich residents and visitors — mud or shine.
