Munich celebrates its birthday
841 candles Come one, come all. The city of Munich invites it’s residents (or anyone else who happens to be in the area between Marienhof and Odeonsplatz on June 12 and 13) to join in the celebration of its 841st birthday. The Schongeising Brass Band starts the party with a fanfare at Marienplatz at 10:00 on June 12, followed by Munich mayor Christian Ude’s official opening of the festivities at 11:00. Other musical highlights during the weekend-long event include performances from jazz musician Georges Delagaye on Saturday at 15:10, and Ukranian folk, pop, and rock from Munich’s sister city, Kiev on Sunday at 15:30. With comedians and dance groups, the Stadtgründungsfest has something for everyone — including the kids. “Kinderland” on Marienhof offers hands-on activities for the fourteen and under set. For those craving culture, a stroll down Theatinerstraße, Viscardigasse, and Residenzstraße is a must. There, local artists will be displaying their talents. New to this year’s celebration is the incorporation of the Alter Hof into the festivities. There’s plenty of fun and food to be had, all presented with a medieval flair. Even if you can’t make it to all of the venues, don’t miss the closing concert with special birthday guest Leo Bischof, the German Elvis.
