June 2002
Bonjour, Madame
From June 14 to September 15, the Hypo-Kunsthalle will pay tribute to history’s most renowned mistress: Madame de Pompadour. As the lover of Louis XV, her illustrious name became synonymous with one of the most glamorous epochs in Europe. De Pompadour also played an important role as a patron of the arts by collecting pictures, furniture, porcelain and goblets, which will be on display as part of the exhibition. Another section focuses on the artworks created by Madame de Pompadour herself, who was a student of the French master François Boucher. Finally, the exhibition gives insight into the interiors of her numerous castles and apartments. Her tasteful designs, imitated in royal circles all over Europe, were known as the “Style Pompadour.” Still, the exhibition enlightens only a few aspects of this multifaceted Madame, as she not only created the style of her era, but was also at the center of intellectual life in France. “Madame de Pompadour—L’Art et l’Amour,” Hypo-Kunsthalle, Theatinerst. 8 (U3/6, 4/5 Odeonsplatz),
