Blazing a trail

Garmisch-Partenkirchen—only one hour away from Munich, in the Alpine foothills—offers numerous possibilities for outdoor winter activities, the most unusual of which is a guided torch walk in the dark through the Partnachklamm, a ravine that was cut into the rocks by the river Partnach over the millennia. The path is about 700 meters long with cliff walls up to 80 m high. This natural phenomenon is stunning enough in itself, however in the winter, covered with huge, glittering icicles, it becomes truly spectacular. Walks are led almost every day in the wintertime, between 5:30 pm and 7 pm, and the starting point of the 45-minute walk is the Graseckseilbahn Talstation. Guided tours (also available in English), including a torch and insurance, cost € 5 per person—extra tours can be arranged for groups of eight or more. Anyone in need of warmth and sustenance may like to round off the excursion with a glass of Glühwein or a hearty Bavarian dinner at the Forsthaus Graseck. The Graseck cableway, which takes walkers back to the starting point, runs every evening until midnight. For information and reservations call (08821) 94 32 40.
