Golden Goal
Picture the scene: gathered around the television, a family is arguing about what program to watch. Dad wants to watch football, the teenage daughter would prefer a soap and mom thinks all TV is bad unless it’s educational. Sound familiar? Well, from this month on, the Bayerischer Rundfunk will be showing an English series that fulfills all these criteria.
Goal is a series about a young Latin American boy, Manni, who goes to England after being signed up by the premier league team, the London Rangers. Over 13 episodes Manni learns about the intricacies of British football, makes friends with the other players and falls in love. The series is actually aimed at English-language learners, though the program includes no didactic material. Instead attention is focused on presenting in an entertaining fashion realistic, colloquial dialogues for language learners. Anyone who does want to use the program either as teaching material or to polish up their own or other family members’ English, can access the scripts at
www.br-online.de/sprachen.
Goal will be showing on the Bayerischer Rundfunk every Saturday, from 10:30 am until 11 am, starting April 26.
