Munich’s Australian and New Zealander community may be few in number, but this doesn’t stop them from celebrating their annual Downunder Ball with passionate intensity. “When we first held the event five years ago, we thought it would be a one-off but it’s built up an incredible following—last year we sold out two weeks in advance,” said Mick Dixon, one of the organizers. “It’s a popular night because it's something different. People get to hear a bit of Strine, listen to some great music, drink some Australian beer and red wine and—for a few brief hours—be transported to a world 16,000 kilometers and an entirely different attitude away.” This year, the tribute to all things Antipodean features the popular cover band Made in Australia, Derryn “Bully” Bull, the Waltzing Matilda Bush Dancers, the inevitable didgeridoo player and a chook raffle, as well as Australian food and drink. The 2003 Downunder Ball will be held on May 17 at the St. Ruperts Kindertagesheim, Kazmairstr 66 (near the Heimeranplatz underground station). Doors open at
6:30 pm. Food is available from 7 pm onwards. Tickets cost € 12 and are available from the Australia Shop, Dachauer Strasse 109 (089) 542 83 91 or the Bondi Bar, Sonnen Strasse 8.
