Right to See
A great place to escape the cold days of January is in front of the big screen. But you won’t just be keeping warm, you’ll be helping others, too, if you go to
see the film
La Espalda
del Mundo (The Back of
the World). Amnesty International’s English-speaking Munich chapter has organized the showing of this film, which won the International Critic’s Award at the San Sebastián
film festival. In three episodes this documentation looks at people who have no rights. Eleven-year-old Guinder Rodríguez from Peru, who labors in a quarry, Mehdi and Leyla Zana, who are imprisoned in Turkey because of their political fight for the Kurdish cause, and Thomas Miller-El, who is wrongfully condemned to the death penalty in the United States are the portrayed in
La Espalda del Mundo. Director Javier Corcuera shows that the “back of the world” can be everywhere, in rich as well as poor countries. The idea
for this film was conceived in 1998, the year of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The film’s showing is made possible by the support of
the Thomas Miller-El group in Madrid and the FedEx Corporation. This 89-minute Spanish film will be shown in its original language with English subtitles at the Gasteig on Saturday, January 10, at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, January 11, at 5 pm. Tickets cost just
€ 5, with proceeds being shared between Amnesty International and the campaign for Thomas Miller-El. Amnesty International’s Munich group meets at 7:30 pm on the last Thursday of each month in the Amnesty International office at Leonrodstr. 19, 1 OG.
