Bearing up well

“Partners” is the name of the exhibition currently showing at the Haus der Kunst until February 15, 2004. Canadian art collector and curator Ydessa Hendeles, who was born in Germany in 1948, the daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors, is presenting part of her collection, including works by Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, August Sander and Jeff Wall. However, simply listing names does insufficient justice to this remarkable exhibition, which truly is an “art experience.” Presented in three passages this show addresses the history of the 20th century in a way that is at once universal, individual and provocative—one room contains a single sculpture of a kneeling Adolf Hitler by the artist Maurizio Cattelan—and ties in well with renovation work at the museum, the interior of which is being restored to its original 1930s design conceived under the National Socialists.
