Soul Searching

To celebrate “Black History Month” this year, the Amerika Haus will be presenting a few nights of entertainment early in the month. On February 3 at 7 pm, enjoy a reading from W. E. B. Du Bois’s book The Souls of Black Folk, first published in 1903. Although only two years later the founder of German sociology, Max Weber, suggested, “Your splendid work The Souls of Black Folk ought to be translated into German,” this was not done until recently. With the initial introduction and popularity of his book in Chicago, the author, who studied in Berlin and returned to Germany two more times during his lifetime (1868–1963), rose practically overnight to a leading position in the civil rights movement. Get physical and jive to the best of Swing, Jazz and Dixie on February 5, beginning at 7 pm. The 18-man group Soldiers of Swing, conducted by Joel L. Joyner, will present music by such Jazz legends as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Tickets are € 8 and available at (089) 55 25 370 or at the Abendkasse. On Friday, February 6 at 6 pm, Iris Schmeisser, who teaches at the Amerika-Institut at the University of Munich, will talk about the impact singer and dancer Josephine Baker had on Paris in the early 1920s. All events will be held at the Amerika Haus, Karolinenplatz 3, U2 Königsplatz/Tram 27, Karolinenplatz. Visit www.amerikahaus.de for details.
