April 2004
State of the Union
May 1 will go down in the history books. On this day ten central and eastern European countries will join the European Union. As this will be the most politically important enlargement in the Union’s 53-year history you might want to engage in an intellectual brush-up to figure out what
these changes will entail. Political scientists, sociologists, philosophers and historians from across the world are participating in a conference “Europe-Beyond East and West?” at Schloss Elmau from April 4 to 7. This erudite event is open to the public and promises to showcase a variety of opinions on a multitude of Europe-related topics. Although it does not cost anything to attend, participants should call Schloss Elmau
at (08823) 18 503/506 before setting out as the schedule is subject to last-minute changes.
