October 2004

Fresh from the gourmet scene

Fancy a cuppa? Then head to Munich’s über-cool design hotel Cortiina at Ledererstrasse 8—living proof that afternoon tea is hip again. Starting in October the hotel will be holding afternoon tea sessions every Saturday afternoon from 2 pm to 5 pm, when a variety of tea specialties along with scones and cucumber sandwiches will be served on Nymphenburg china. “The porcelain is extremely valuable—no two cups and saucers are the same,” the manager assured us.

If you’re after something a little stronger than tea, try the so-stylish-it-hurts Armani Bar in the Fünf Höfe, which has undergone recent renovation. Espy beautiful people, sip ginger martinis and dream on…

And speaking of dreaming, who wouldn’t give their all to have a stylish bulthaup kitchen? Now’s your chance at least to have your dinner cooked in one, at the bulthaup innovative cuisine day, which takes place in the shop at Herrnstrasse 44 on October 21. For € 20 per person guests can watch chefs prepare a range of fingerfood using back-to-basics ingredients. Tickets include all food and drink and can be reserved online at www.bulthaup.de.

Anyone hungry for something heartier should be sure to jot down October 17 in their calender, the day when several Munich establishments will be holding goose and duck feasts to mark the religious festival Kirchweih, which is held annually on the third Sunday of October to celebrate the consecration of churches.

There’s more hefty fare on offer at the Wirtshaus in der Au, which starts its jazz brunch season on October 10. Every Sunday, from 12 noon until 3 pm, diners can enjoy a traditional Bavarian brunch of Weisswurst, Brezeln or Schweinsbraten, accompanied by some soul-stirring music. For details, see www.wirtshausinderau.de.

If autumnal gluttony is not your thing, cast your mind to sunnier climes. Online wine dealer Vinumshop.de is holding its South Africa Days in the Holiday Inn City hotel am Gasteig, Hochstrasse 3. In addition to tastings, the event on October 23 and 24 will feature presentations as well as cultural and culinary treats. For more information call (07000) 466 63 48.

And if you’re planning on driving home… Siemens is in the process of developing a mobile phone with a built-in alcohol sensor that will be able to measure whether the user is fit to drive. The only hitch? It’ll be another two years before the device hits the market.

Munich’s gastro whirl continues. A few new spots to try this month include Degustini at Kapuzinerstrasse 25b—a Mediterranean wine restaurant, which promises an all-round artistic treat. As well as changing daily menus with accompanying wines, the restaurant’s owners also single out their contemporary cutlery and plates, modern floristic art and décor designed on the advice of a feng shui expert. For more basic food, try Nero at Rumfordstrassse 34, (formerly Rincon), which describes itself as a modern, urban pizza lounge, serving what it claims is probably the best pizza in town. Another old favorite, Froh und Munter at Artilleriestrasse 5 has also undergone a revamp, and is now called Zentrale. And Leon’s Irish Pub at Schraudolphstrasse 24 has also been replaced by a new International Pub, The Arc. With a 23-hour-license, it is promising to show lots of round-the-clock live sport from across the world. In an attempt to attract early drinkers, The Arc has introduced a novelty hour, “Toss the Boss,” from 6 pm until 7 pm, Mon–Thurs: with every glass of beer, wine or non-alcoholic beverage they buy, punters are invited to toss a coin and guess whether it’ll come up heads or tails. Predict correctly, and your drink is on the house.
