If it doesn’t feel like summer without sand beneath your toes, head to one of the temporary beach bars that bring a Mediterranean breeze to our Alpine city.

The Kulturstand (cultural beach) project has set up an urban beach bar on the Ludwigs Bridge opposite of the Deutsches Museum with tons of sand and comfortable deckchairs. Each day from noon children may build sand castles while parents have a cold drink. At night, a diverse cultural programming, such as open-air movie nights and live DJs will entertain visitors to the beach. However, don't expect to see the sun rise over the sand: the venue will close as early as 11 pm to avoid complaints from nearby residents. Nektar Beach

Nektar—the Stubenvollstrasse restaurant known for exclusive and eventful dining—will extend its offerings to an open-air area on Praterinsel until September 10. Red golf bunker sand and fancy Ameno Living furniture are a step up from your usual beach blanket bingo. Chef Murri Keljmeni will barbecue exotic dishes (€ 11–20), and there will be a champagne bar to wash it all down. Cocktails cost € 7.50. Nektar Beach is open daily from 11 am through 2 am.



Bamboo Beach Bar

The Bamboo Beach Bar offers sportier summer relaxation at Kultfabrik, behind the Ostbahnhof. Beach volleyball fields and soccer fields with Carribean sand await ambitious players. Palm trees, deck chairs and a small lago in the bar area create a chill atmosphere. But, be aware that your fellow patrons might have a different conception of relaxation: Kultfabrik mainly attracts a young crowd, for whom booze-fueled partying is the main priority. Bamboo Beach Bar will be open until the end of summer, daily from noon until the wee hours of the night. Cocktails cost € 4.80 before 10 pm, and € 6.80 thereafter.

The Sausalitos Summer Bar successfully fuses Bavarian outdoor culture with spicy Latin celebrations. Located within the beer garden of the Hofbräukeller at Wiener Platz, the seasonal extension of the Mexican diner has established a beach area with sand from the Mediterranean and deck chairs. Between 4 pm and 7 pm, cocktails are half-price; after, all drinks cost € 7.50. The bar is tied to the beer garden’s hours of operation, which means that the curfew is strictly at 11 pm. Depending on the weather, both beer garden and bar will be open until mid-September.

Nothing can keep up with a day at the sea. The closest one can get to it in Munich, though, is a visit to Prinzregentenbad. Aside from a classic pool area, the public facility has installed a beach area where anything from beach volleyball and speed badminton to sunbathing and building sand castles is possible. Refreshing drinks and snacks are served at the pool's modern beach bar.
