As of 1318, the Münchner Brezenreiter (Munich Brezen Rider) galloped through the city serving free Brezen (pretzels) to the poor. Sponsored by wealthy citizens the philanthropic tradition lasted until 1801 and was only taken up again five years ago. Luckily, however, the modern social system does not require such limited charity any longer and the Breznreiter will be just another highlight of the city anniversary celebrations. Circling the city center with stops at Marienplatz, Theatinerstrasse, Odeonsplatz and Viktualienmarkt, Munich policeman, Horst Hatzold, will hand out 853 Brezen—one for each year of the city's existence—from his horse.
