On June 14, 853 years ago Emporer Friedrich Barbarossa assigned to Munich the important right to mint and issue coins, as well as the authorization to hold markets. Celebrating this important anniversary, which marked the beginning of centuries of city life, Munich will host two days of open-air festivities: A craftsmen village on Odeonsplatz will present the trade of more than twenty guilds. Marienplatz will feature a great line-up of performances by folk groups, choir ensembles and rock'n'roll bands. On Saturday between 2 pm and 5:30 pm the Hofbräuhaus will host free dancing lessons introducing to the traditional Munich Francaise. Emphasizing decades of friendship between Bavaria and Ireland, Irish folk music groups will perform at the Richard-Strauss-Brunnen. The city will also use the event as an opportunity to promote its application for the Winter Olympics 2018 with fun activities simulating winter sports on summery Max-Joseph-Platz. Of course, no one will have to party on an empty stomach as food stalls will be put up throughout the pedestrian zone. Festivities will start at 10 am on both days and will end at 11 pm on Saturday. The next night birthday celebrations will only last until 10 pm.
