Closing of the Gärtnerplatztheater
Through April 22:
Seize your last chance to visit a performance at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz before Munich’s smaller opera will be closed for a two-year reconstruction period.
Perhaps, it may not be visible at first appearance, but the opera house located on Gärtnerplatz will require extensive reconstruction work. Both, the heating system and the insulation date back to the beginning of the 20th century and the sanitary installations of the historical building are also outdated. In order to come to terms with the theater's notorious space problems, two new underground floors will be scooped out beneath the opera house. Changes visible to the public will be an extension of the foyer area and the accessibility for people with disabilities will be highly improved.
Reconstruction work is expected to last until 2014. Still, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz ensemble will not retire and perform at various Munich venues, including the Prinzregententheater, the Alte Kongresshalle and the Gasteig. The last performance—an opera gala night featuring highlights of the past season—at the theater's home base will be held on April 22.
