Despite her popularity among American intellectuals, European exhibition-goers are still to discover the work of one of America's most prominent artists of the past century. Born in 1887 in Wisconsin, O'Keeffe produced more than 2000 works until her death a the age of 98. Her choice of images started out with abstract paintings and soon shifted to landscape pictures and city portraits capturing the idiosyncrasies of New Mexico and New York. She also became famous for her gigantic floral motives that are above all considered as an act of emancipation by redefining imagery that is often associated with femininity. Apart from a relevant selection from all of O'Keeffe's work phases, the exhibition will in addition feature documentary material on the artist, who has propelled the disengagement of American art from its European roots like none of her contemporaries.
