Oktoberfest Rides

There are about 80 rides on the Oktoberfest run by carny families, most of who have been working for the Oktoberfest since the beginning of the 20th century. Besides traditional rides, the Wies'n annually presents exciting new fairground attractions featuring the latest technological innovations.

TRADITIONAL RIDES

Krinoline 98x74

Krinoline

Krinoline is a nostalgic merry-go-around for the whole family. Because it rotates in wavy movements the ride was named after the ruffled 19th-century crinoline petticoat. Fairgoers sit in open cabins for parties of about five people. Until 1936 the merry-go-around was operated by manpower, today a Bavarian brass band is a reminder of former times.

Riesenrad 98x74

Riesenrad

A 12-meter (39-foot) high Ferris wheel (Riesenrad) was first introduced to the Oktoberfest in 1880. Today, the most prominent of all rides measures 48 meters (157 foot) in diameter and features a magnificent bird's eye view of the Oktoberfest premises.

Schichtl 98x74

Schichtl

Named after its founder, Michael Schichtl (1851-1911), this vaudeville tent has been an inherent part of the Oktoberfest since 1869. In short performances the audience witnesses illusions and hilarious little tricks. The most famous illusion of the Schichtl performances is the "Decapitationof a living person by means of a guillotine," which uses a member of the audience as a "victim."

Teufelsrad 98x74

Teufelsrad

The Teufelsrad (Devil's Wheel) is a rotating platform, on which visitors sit or lie while the platform increases its speed. Staying on the Devil’s Wheel gets even more difficult as staff members try to get people off the platform with lassos and other devices. A Bavarian presenter offers satirical commentary on the event. For those who don't feel like trying their luck on the Teufelsrad, there is a viewing area. Indeed, watching the wheel is as entertaining as participating in the game, which has been an Oktoberfest favorite since 1910.

Toboggan 98x74

Toboggan

First established in 1906, the current edition of this tower-slide has been featured since 1933. Its name is derived from Canadian Algonquin Indians, who termed their wooden snow slides "toboggans." Visitors to this ride first have to step on a running band conveyor, which carries them to the top of the tower. From here the slide starts continuing on in precipitous loops. Toboggan is a rare ride only to be found on very few fairgrounds. But be advised to stop by before visiting the tents. The running is fast and sobriety helps!
