Theater Pleasures
September 17, 12 pm–11 pm:
The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz will give visitors the chance to look behind the scenes as part of an open house event for the whole family.
Like no other buildings, an opera house combines two rather contrary spheres. The public part displays architectural grandeur while the backstage area rather reminds one of a plain office building. Once a year, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz gives visitors the chance to take a peek at the unglamorous parts of its premises, where all the on-stage excitement that is visible for the audience have their beginnings. Apart from guided tours, the TheaterVegnügen (Theater Pleasures) event will also host a costume flea market and public rehearsals.
Amateur musicians may also try out their conducting skills with a professional orchestra. Kids will be entertained with make-up workshops and elementary introductions to operas and instruments. Highlight of the free event will be a gala performance at 7:30 pm presenting the ensemble of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz and productions of the upcoming season. The TheaterVergnügen event will be the last chance to visit all of the theater's premises before the building will be shut down for reconstruction work from May 2012 to August 2015.
