Loans by the world's most prominent museums—the Louvre, the MoMa, the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, and the Tate Gallery, London—will come to Munich to round out the Pinakothek's home collection of works by Max Beckmann. Drawing from such a fantastic stock, curator Carla Schulz-Hoffmann, will set out to redefine the chauvinist cliché often ascribed to the three great painters Picasso, Beckmann and de Kooning. Schulz-Hoffmann will focus on their portraits of women and will attempt to show that all three artists saw more in women than mere sex objects to be captured on canvas. Following the curator's line of argument, women play a rather complex role and reflect the artists' zeitgeist and their deeper longings for a freedom outside a rigid society. If this new approach will convince visitors of the exhibition, remains to be seen. No matter what, art lovers will get the rare chance to contemplate the paintings by Beckmann, Picasso and de Kooning in a dialogue with each other.
