According to popular lore, this restaurant’s namesake, Mario, was “l’uomo che ha portato la pizza a Monaco” (the guy who imported pizza to Munich). In the mid 1960s, Mario Gargiulo came from Sorrento to Munich as a guest worker, intending to stay only two years. Forty years later, Mario is still bringing a taste of Naples to the city. Compared to more flimsy interpretations, a pizza at Bei Mario consists of a thick dough with a high edge. The opulent toppings and generous oiling make up a rich plate—sharing makes sense here!
